You guys should make a video using that Corsair Spec 04 1300 where you modify it to improve it, showing how on a budget with some power tools you could make it actually usable =P Also it would be neat to hear your opinions on my current case, the Genome 2 from Deepcool (has a T-virus res on the front). Personally I bought it for looks/style over performance as it was always going to have a dual AIO loop config (one on GPU one on CPU) so temps would be pretty good regardless, but I couldn't find any results for this case on your site, just a brief mention of its existence in one article. =)

Steve, the bottom fan is just there if you need to cool a HDD.. A 7200 or more so a 10k RPM drive may not get enough air in that space otherwise with a cramped cabling. Yes people still use HDDs still.. :-D If you dont need it down there, then TT likely just used a common sense model of thinking and figured the user would move it.. I wouldn't dig to deep into factory fan placement.. They could likely just be in those placements because the worker putting the case together just likes putting the fans in those spots.. No other reason..

do I lose cooling performance by filling my case with fans? (3 IN, 3 OUT) - not water cooled.

Would you consider reviewing the thermaltake core x31 tg edition? It's a bit older but it seems to address your concerns with this case

You should test the P7-C1 Por from Aerocool. It has a mesh front panel and i think 3 fans included. It could be a good competitor for top thermals.

If the front fans can be moved up, then another fan can be added. Why no test with the third front fan that Thermaltake apparently neglected to provide? You know perfectly well that the open space between the high pressure side and the low pressure side of the internal bulkhead will cause recirculation of heated air. The bottom fan is for preventing recirculation, not blowing air on wires-- obviously. If you bought a car with only three wheels included, would you do a bunch of tests to see which configuration of three wheels makes for the best driving experience? Based on the configuration of the chassis, this case needs at least four fans to run any kind of meaningful thermal performance test. End of story. If you need a logical speculation as to motive, Thermaltake wanted to include just enough fans to claim that both exhaust and intake fans are included, but they didn't want to spend enough on fans to achieve nominal performance. I mean, who actually uses the fans that come with the case? Do any of you actually believe that the people who are buying $250 cases are using stock fans in any configuration? Based on what I've seen of materials and workmanship here, I'm thinking that phoning it in on the quality and number of fans customers get to throw away is something we can all easily forgive. It's just too bad that Mr. Science here cares more about handing out zingers than he does about methodology. The people researching cases in earnest (rather than as a means of generating maximum opportunity for public self congratulation) are bound to be extremely disappointed.

I don't own this particular case, but I have owned TT cases before and have been very satisfied (despite missing fans that I didn't plan to use). It just ticked me off that he was trying to present his own preferences as scientific findings. Granted, it is sort of TTs fault for giving him the opportunity, but this isn't the first time I've seen him pull this sort of thing. If he had called out TT for poor QA because of the fans, that would've been fine. Instead, he published a pretty obvious hatchet job. I'm glad to hear that the case is working out well for you. It looks fantastic.

Mine came with 4 fans, 3 120 mm in the front and 1 120 mm in the rear, but I've heard of people getting two 140 mm in the front despite the box saying it comes with 4 total fans. But you're absolutely right, I have 8 fans running in total with a push/pull AIO setup and I get WAY better temps than Steve and it's whisper quiet to boot. Do you own this case as well?

To each his own but I did not like the look of the Evolv X compared to this, the oddly recessed front looks like a giant case for a giant Nintendo Switch.

For every case reviewed I would love to see a "GN-approved" optimal case configuration to be thermally tested (with all panels attached for daily use, of course). In this case mine would be HDD cage only in the PSU shroud and 3x 140 mm quality fans in the front. This is how I would run such a case and I would love to see how that performs.

Thanks for the review, I was looking at it for the looks (TG, TG swinging door, and that cool aluminum look), a little disappointed with the thermals, but I guess it makes sense, with TT having a bias for AIO/Water-cooling over fan cooling. Unfortunately the competitors you listed don't have the stuff I like for looks, so I guess this is my only option with TG and swinging door design.

I have an AIO push/pull setup (280 mm top-mounted rad, 4 140 mm fans) with an additional 4 case fans (all aftermarket) and I'm getting phenomenal temps, way better than Steve, and it's whisper quiet to boot. CPU is an overclocked i7-9700k, GPU is an overclocked GTX 1070. I loved the aesthetics of this case and while it wasn't what I wanted when I went to Frys, they had just unboxed a display unit that I got for $200. Let me know if you bought it or are planning to buy it and have any additional questions, would love to help out if need be.

Thanks for making this video GN. I was considering between this case and the Evolv X but now that I have seen this review I'm leaning towards the Evolv X. I'm not a big fan of water cooling so I tend to pay a bit more attention to thermals in cases. Great video.

Why are most cases not putting space for an optical drive in the front of the case anymore? Are these drives becoming obsolete?

I've seen this case in person, and it does not feel like a $250 case. USB-C is not 3.1 Gen 2, and the drive cages feel cheap. The airflow looks poorly designed, as Steve mentioned.

Vor 25 Tage
Toaster N'Friends
Toaster N'Friends

I just finished a build in this case, Fry's had just unboxed it for display and I pulled the trigger on it after we negotiated for $200 (yup, you can haggle at Fry's, at least for display items). I bought it almost exclusively because I loved the aesthetics and the exterior design quality is actually fantastic, but you're 100% correct, the HDD cages are on the flimsy side and I made a lot of changes to fix most of the airflow issues. I'm getting better temps than Steve with an AIO and 8 fans. Other than the looks, the other positive thing I noticed right away was how quiet it is, though I did spend quite awhile adjusting my fan curve. Overall, and reflecting what Steve mentioned, I can't recommend it unless you find the looks to die for, which I personally did, but even then there are plenty of other great looking cases at a far better value.

I’m still stuck in the era of full-aluminum Lian Li cases that are disgustingly light. I was rebuilding my media/ripping system recently, and after looking at all the modern cases, decided to buy a couple hole saws and add some airflow to my old Lian Li tower. The case is old enough that it was built for 80mm intake and exhaust fans, but dear god it’s light. You can’t see inside the case, as there are no windows, and the front USB is a 3.5” bay adapter, but it does a great job dealing with heat and that is good enough for me.

If the goal is either LED or Cooling then I prefer either a full glass front with a lot of side mesh or all front mesh cases. That case I'd probably use 3 front fans.
