Intel i7-7700K Revisit: Benchmark vs. 9700K, 2700, 9900K, & More

We're revisiting the Intel i7-7700K, which feels a whole lot older than it is given the pace of Intel's product launches. This benchmark comes in at the end of 2018 to compare against the 9700K, 8700K, et al.

    Article: www.gamersnexus.net/guides/3423-intel-i7-7700k-revisit-benchmark-vs-9700k-2700-9900k
Find the i7-8700K on Amazon: geni.us/uiHw
or the 9700K on Amazon: geni.us/SAKL
    and the R7 2700X on Amazon: geni.us/NtpF
The Intel i7-7700K got the short straw when Intel was drawing for products, launching in January of 2017 and being superseded just 9 months later by the objectively and notably superior i7-8700K. The 7700K was still a strong overclocker, so we wanted to revisit this CPU with a 5.1 and 5.0GHz OC applied (depending on test) to see how it benchmarks versus the i7-8700K, 9700K, 9900K, R7 2700, and more.

Got a terrible lottery roll with my 7700k (Delidded) at 4.9ghz with -2 avx offset and my brother got the 7600k (Delidded) and won the lottery at 5.3ghz and -2 as well... (Both on 1080Ti Hybrids) But yeah back when we bought them we were super salty a few months later, but I digress I'm still on the fence about when to upgrade... PLEASE STEVE keep us F***ed 7700k owners in mind in future content as to when to upgrade lol.... No but Seriously..... we love you

as a 7700k owner, the 5,1 ghz oc is not realistic, I got mine at 4,9ghz at 1,35v because 5,0 is unreachable unless you go 1,42v on my unit and as I read on other places, not delidded that's average :p otherwise nice video

I've been debating the upgrade myself. I run the i7-7700k on an MSI Z270 M-Power Titanium board. After watching this video I can honestly say I am happy with the 7700k. I think we're getting to the point where paying MSRP for next years spoils isn't worth it. I remember the days where a top dollar computer would be "obsolete" in 2 years.

I'm super glad this video is out there cause I was beginning to debate whether I wanted to upgrade or not. I'm using the same 2080ti they used in this video (the XC ultra) and the bottleneck issue wasn't ever enough of an issue to me to really think of since i'm at 1440p and only 75hz. Recently though I had some extra cash laying around and after seeing some of the CPU's that came out after I was wondering if an upgrade was worth it and this totally answered my questions. It's awesome to see how well the 7700K holds up even today and after watching this I'll definitely just hold out for another 6mos-1year for the next CPU's to come out and then finally make the switch.

Mine is at 4,75Ghz, all 4 cores on +-1,325V with a NZXT X62 cooler. Anything above that, I will run to hot. Now when I render video's, it stays around 80°C. It is not delited but I'm disappointed that I can't puch it further then that because of the temps. I7700k overclock with a 1060 6 GB overclock for 1080p gaming is decent enough for me. Just disappointed in the CPU because I see alot of people get way higher core speeds. Thanks for the video, like always, great work!

I'm using a 7700K in a 370i MB, I do love all benchmarks scores and the way the tech evolved but 7700K is still worth all the price payed. I'm typing in a 6 cores 12 threads @4Ghz here and 7700K @ 4c/8t 4.6Ghz still ruling this machine. If GHZ is the point, 7700 still the fastest stock single core speed on the charts.

Honestly I think I'm ready for an upgrade. I will wait for this 2019 line up of CPUs to see what AMD is offering with Ryzen 3. I was thinking on a Threadripper sense I want to stream at 1440p or 4K which my current i7-6700K cannot do. I also want a better GPU than my 1080 but man, I really don't wanna spend a lot of money. If anything I just need to replace my GPU, CPU and Motherboard my storage, RAM and PSU are more than adequate.

I'm still on my 6700k and would love to see how it stacks up with emphasis on life expectancy and whether it is truly worth upgrading for a casual content creator and gamer. Currently it is not OC'd, and is in a custom water cooled system so overclocking would not be an issue if this cpu is still worth keeping. It is on a ROG Maximus VIII Hero Alpha with a full 64 gig of ddr 4 3600 ram and dual 1080TI's. I really want to upgrade but am trying to be sensible about what I have and if it is truly worth scrapping a 3 year old system simply because I want new toys... lol

Thanks for the video review. No point for me as both my 7700k machines have them paired with gtx 1080ti and 1070, and run cool ( they got delided 5 minutes after getting them out of the box). Good point about upgrading not worth yet but oc if you really need to... Especially if you run 1080 like i do.. upgrading now would mean that i need new CPU and new MB taking me back 600£ for about 15 fps gain...

Great content as always GN! I am currently rocking a i5 6600 with a 1080ti on a z170 board. I'm really only interested in 4k gaming (no vid editing or blender work) and I've noticed the obvious limitations of the i5 for this. My question is this, do i look to migrate to 8th/9th gen i5/i7 with a new mobo or should I just get the 7700k with a solid cooler? For 4k gaming, will the 7700k perform the same as say a 8700k? After updating the BIOS on my Gigabyte gaming 5 motherboard I can just set "CPU Upgrade" to 5.0Ghz and XMP to memory profile one and boom...there I am. People say voltage gets set too high when they auto OC but mine barely tweaks it and my package temp gets up to around 80c max after 2 hours of 100% load on realbench stresstest or prime95. Prime95 is brutal and actually gets it up to 82-84c after awhile. If I step it down to 4.8Ghz the temps never break 80c. My question is how hot is too hot? At what temp do you shut it down and step it back a little? Is say....85c harmful to this chip? Would you just run 5.0 and not worry about it or would you stay at "only" 4.8 and know you never break 80c? Happy New year!

You need to also get 3DS Max and/or Maya for render performance rather than just Blender. I do 3D art and the Blender results tell me diddly squat because I use 3DS Max by preference or Maya if the company I am working for prefers it and all their plugins are on it. Blender may be good but it is also incredibly bad with design choices like left click to select? No that places a pivot point! Right click to open a menu? No that's select! Gah I hate Blender... 6 hours to retrain my brain because someone couldn't be arsed to make the UI work like the majority of professional/amateur software and another 6 hours to untrain.

I've been holding 5GHz on mine though I may try for 5.1 since I never did and I've got both thermal and voltage headroom left. I've noticed being bottlenecked a touch by the 2080ti but to be honest I still get high enough frame rates that it would take either a feature improvement or something else to get me to upgrade. Read this if you play competitively and run anything past 75Hz refresh rate, you will have more frames, thus requiring more cpu cores for more frame calls to the gpu. I delided my 7700k. Easily hits 5GHz at 1.340v. Sits at 70c max under 100% load. Not a care in the world. I have it with a 1060 6g and Im running 1080p60. No need to do anything at the moment. Sure I'd love to do a 1080 with this and maybe 144hz. But for the moment its fine. I can turn up most of the eye candy in GTAV except for the grass.
