Although Intel didn't give a release date for its 10nm Sunny Cove (Ice Lake) CPUs and didn't talk Arctic Sound GPUs, the company still had a lot to announce.
Ad: Buy the Thermaltake Core P3 geni.us/3qJNr on Amazon
We speak with David Kanter on Intel's new 10nm CPU architectures and 3D die stacking approach to CPU design, including discussion of Sunny Cove (the Ice Lake core) and more. Topics include challenges Intel will face with 3D stacking, questions asked of Jim Keller and Raja Koduri, improvements this approach may yield, and more. Sunny Cove, Willow Cove, Golden Cove, and Ice Lake are all key names here and, despite getting much of the core specs early, we're still waiting on product information. That would include 10nm Ice Lake frequencies, pricing, and core count.

Still processing 1080p! We filmed this after an entire day of arch and worked on it all night. Huge thanks to David Kanter for some highly technical discussion of Intel's new architecture announcements. We linked his other work in the description above. Brad Cox Yeah, Optane DIMMs are one of the few actually interesting things in computing right now. It should be fast enough that low-end systems could essentially use it main memory _as_ storage, which brings up all kinds of interesting questions... What does it mean to load a program or shared library when it’s all already in main memory?

Transistors more spread apart is good? Some (don't remember who) compared AMD's 7nM to Intel's 10nM because the 7nM transistors were spread as far out as intel's 10nM.

Heres a crazy idea, and probably crazy hard to do. For cooling of a many stacked high power chip, it should be built with millions or thousands of tiny pipes that travel in an around the chips and carry water and then out to a radiator and looping back in. Or the active interposer has water running through it or a non conducting liquid stuff...

Dont expect anything for gaming PCs.. Here's whats expected... a mobile chip and a super super expensive HPC chip. "Obviously, it’s early days for 3D packaging, so we can’t expect everything to be revealed immediately. The first Foverus-based product is scheduled to be released in the second half of 2019. It will combine a 10nm x86 compute die with a 22nm low-power base die, and capped with package-on-package memory. From the looks of it, the package will be targeted at mobile applications. For the HPC crowd, a more compelling Foverus implementation would be one that integrates x86 Xeon CPUs, AI chips and photonics processors, along with Optane memory and DRAM dies thrown in for good measure. That might turn out to be something close to what we see in the upcoming Aurora supercomputer in 2021. But given Intel’s interest in countering NVIDIA’s and AMD’s high-end ambitions, we may not have to wait that long to see the first 3D packages for HPC." I am 100% not qualified to be confidently taking about this, but if they wanted stacked processors, why not make a new kind of motherboard slot so that you plug the CPU in the same orientation as (for example) the GPU card? This would let you have access to both sides of the chip for more cooling.

All this sounds to me like Intel just.... "reasoning" why they've been digging a hole. I can see AMD saying... "hey... you have this hole that you dug... why not just lay down and we''ll throw the dirt on". Everything this gentleman said basically speaks to nothing that's actually occurring presently, it really seems 'hopeful' but I think that ship has sailed. What sucks is I'm a total Intel fan and I have liked what they "were" putting out (8 years ago when I bought Sandybridge) really fantastic stuff (STILL! running that chip with triple monitor with absolutely NO issues ). I'm not deserting them during their struggle but... its just been going on soo long I'm like... 5ghz, twice the cores for the same price? no thanks. Ryzen 2 around the corner is tha freak nasty! Like the old Athlon I bought with Alphacool cooler overclocked or the 4400+ I bought after that. Both those chips were rippin' and buried the competition. Seems like this hole Intel has been digging is going to be used again. I win, I'm a consumer, I can buy the good stuff instead of Intel next year. :) Also, RAM is way faster than Optane so not sure where he's going with that other than mobile or some ridiculous price for main system memory which no one will afford. I know he doesn't work for Intel but .... such a bias with no substantiation.

Where the 3d stacking will come into play is the cell phone side sunny cove main core hooked to atom low power cores with sick igpu .. and x86 .. soon cell phones will be able to run full blown windows applications .. I think intel will have a huge impact on the cell market if someone can come in and customize a 3d stack for there phone.. Intel is doing things very smart I believe

talking about new advancements in tech is a lot of Fun, but truly until we can have hands on cant really say much. We can hype, and Hope! Competition is strong at the moment, so the next decade 5 years or so should prove quite exciting for the CPU market. I personally feel like we're in a GPU LuL at the moment. While RTX and raytracing will be a great improvement over rasterize, its likely going to be atleast another 5 years before its widely adopted, even more so given the consoles will all be AMD based, and AMD isn't ready to fully jump into the ray tracing pool just yet, given the performance impact.

Here's a prediction related to 3D stacking: baaaaaad idea and will cost them dearly. I'm not a designer, but common sense dictates that when it comes to design the best product is the one that is the simplest while performing the same. 3D stacking sounds like a "we did it to prove we can ", not a serious product line....and frankly seems like they admitted as much to you guys. This at a time when (if the amd zen 2 rumours are even 50% true) they are clearly coming under intense pressure.

The last two are pretty inaccurate. Ryzen was good value but hardly "wrecked" Intel. Intel's next architecture probably won't be much better than Zen2 and they're likely to be overpriced for the performance again, knowing Intel.
