HW News - Intel 7nm EUV CPUs, Memory Prices Drop for 2019

    Dauer: 17:15

Hardware news this week focuses on Intel process advancements in 10nm and 7nm, Walmart slashing gaming PC prices, 16TB HDDs, and gaming monitors.
Ad: Corsair Vengeance RGB RAM on Amazon (geni.us/W9tpRBL)

This hardware news episode has several major topics of discussion, with Intel's progress in the 10nm and 7nm segments as the leading story. As the world makes progress with Extreme Ultra-Violet Lithography, 7nm becomes more viable for Intel to move beyond its DUV approach that it has become embattled with for 10nm.
Beyond this story, DRAM prices are looking at a decline into 1Q19, which is good news for the desktop DIY builder. Gaming monitor sales have also skyrocketed about 2x for 100Hz+ displays, largely driven by popularity of Battle Royale games like Fortnite and PUBG.

Memory really is coming down. I bought a kit of 32 GB (2x16) TridentZ 3200 cl14 about 3 months after Ryzen released (1000 series)... for $370. Now I see it for $255. Maybe I'll grab another kit to max out at 64 GB.. I use RAMcaching for three 8 TB mech drives. Mostly I dedicate 12 GB of RAM to the games drive, this way I don't need to buy a 4 TB SSD. Wow, I just looked up prices for these 4 TB SSDs, and they're down to $300 for a Samsung 860 EVO (SATA3). I guess *all* types of memory are coming down. Anyways, the RAMcaching is still faster... maybe I'll get the 4 TB *and* more memory.. hmmm.

If it makes you feel better I don't care about the titan benchmarks. Pretty much o don't really care about Nvidia 20 series cards at all. The 10 series wad great but these ones are priced soo much out of reach that they seem unobtanium while also delivering lackluster performance to somehow justify the price.

Used to be you went with Intel CPU and AMD GPU. Get the best reliability while supporting the competitor. Now, you buy AMD CPU with Intel (Nvidia) GPU. Looks like a symbiotic competition rather than real competiton. AMD CPUs have gotten better marketshare not because they are better, but Intel has made an arse out of themselves (CPU paste fad, heat throtteling etc). Same with AMD GPUs. Its not that Nvidia GPU is better, but AMD has made an arse of itself (Polaris re-hash since R9 290 and Vega flop). I dont see a standard market competiton, but as a shared competiton to tip the marketshares as needed. Thus advancing the technology in a multiple times faster than in a regular competiton. I endorse it, because it LOOKS like competiton to the governments but as ever faster development to customers.

Timestamp for Memory Prices should be 06:44. Also I call BS on a gaming monitor being defined by high refresh rate. So My 4K G-Sync 1ms Acer Predator clearly isn't a "gaming" monitor because it's 60 Hz, despite having gaming features such as a choice of aim points, refresh rate counter, Gsync and Predactor being a gaming brand.

They're better now, but I'd really recommend: 1) Take a look at r/buildapc or r/pcmasterrace. These communities would be more than willing to help you learn how to build it yourself. It's really not as complicated as some people might think, and can be a very rewarding experience. If you still don't feel comfortable trying something like that, though... 2)... NZXT might be a better bet. http://www.letsbld.com They're transparent with prices (99 dollar build fee) and actually give you consumer hardware instead of cutting corners with neutered motherboards and PSUs. TL,DR: In my opinion, you're better off spending your money elsewhere.

Recently when I watch these at 1080p in the default youtube view in a window taking up 2/3 of a 24" monitor the timer text is aids. Making the video larger by maximizing the window or going theater mode without changing the window size makes the text readable. The text is not scaling well when watching in a smaller frame. For example the old "HW News - Tom's Censorship, NVIDIA Dumps 10-Series on Partners" text is clear to a smaller size. Maybe just a issue to me as text degradation will always happen as the window is made smaller its just that the size I normally watch at is now affected bc of some change to the video/text in production.

Gaming at 4k is dumb, since there's not actual rig that can handle AAA titles at 144 fps constant at 4k. That said, you can perfectly do gaming at 1440p 144hz with ryzen+vega. That said, intel+nvidia is for enthusiast that want the last half of max frame even if they dont even use it. Until 4k 144fps can be done, AMD+Radeon is the way to go. Why would i need 500 frames per second in CS:GO if you use 240 hz monitor, and 240 fps can be easily achieved with a mere R5 1500x (mine).

Vor Monat
Lean Sune
Lean Sune

+Andrew Ryder my point is that gaming in ryzen is best price-performance than intel and nvidia, again, i know that 200+fps in cs go is nothing against getting stable 100 fps in AAA tittles or upcoming tittles. But yet again, with a 2600 ryzen u can easy go for it. My point is that the best scenarios for gaming are 1080 at 240hz and 1440 at 144hz, both of them affordables with any ryzen setup. At 4k no matter what is your config, you will not be able to get 144fps (stables) in AAA tittles.

Vor 23 Tage
Andrew Ryder
Andrew Ryder

@Lean Sune — It's not just for the "last half of max frame". I'm sure that your R5 1500 & Radeon does a GREAT job in CS:GO, but that doesn't mean that it will in EVERY game (or that you'll be able to get good performance in 2019 titles like Anthem, Beyond Good and Evil 2, Dying Light 2, Far Cry New Dawn, and Metro Exodus). There are ALREADY titles where combos that get 200+ fps in CS:GO struggle to get 60-70 fps. It all depends on what you play, and (in some cases) what you MIGHT play in the future.

Hey there anyone who may wish to pine on this. IU have a budget of £1500 for a new rig. My question is should I hold off getting it until the Ryzen 3000 and Navi GPU range is revealed, so some way into the new year at least, or just get a solid Mobo+RAM now and wait on the rest? I ask because I am itching to buy what I have specced currently however all this stuff I keep on reading about AMD has me thinking I need to hold off. I mean, my prospective rig would be run by a Ryzen 7 2700x but thanks to gamers Nexus I know all I need is a Ryzen 7 2700 and simply give it a mild overclock to bring it up to 2700x specs and booyah. A small saving is had. So there you go. Any and all responses welcome.

I don't think you can go wrong by holding off a few months. I've been planning a build based on the 2700 or 2700X, but I decided to upgrade my monitor and GPU first. I got a good price on a GSync monitor and a not-quite-as-good price on a 1070Ti, but it looks like I'll be behind the curve real soon. So I'm delaying the rest of the build until I see what's available in the Ryzen 3000s. The idea is that waiting a few months now might give me a system with a couple of years more useful life, or something like that. http://pcpartpicker.com/list/RgXJZR

Well IF Intel hits its goals for 7nm it will be better than TSMC's 7nm process. That said i doubt Intel will hit its original goals with its 7nm process.as that will mean making the currently 20nm parts be 10nm ~ 12nm in size. Yes a 14nm process has 20nm parts in it as the name is not really representative of the process node. As 20nm is probably the biggest part in the 14nm process node right now hopefully they will be able to get the 140% increase of the 10nm process node on the 7nm process node.

Sooo... Just thinking about the economies of scale and development time it's taken for these advancements to come... What would happen if someone bombed AMD and Intel's primary manufacturing plants? Like? Are we talking about being set back a decade or two in development time for new processors? It never 'really' occurred to me, but there are so few sites that actually make the silicon wafers that losing them would represent not just a major economic setback for the US, but for the world. Am I wrong?

PC gaming will never die simply because all games are developed on PCs. So, no matter what, there will be a ton of games for PCs no matter what console or mobile gamers claim. It's hard to say. By the time 5nm becomes viable, we might already be into sub-nanometer, i.e., single-atom transistors. "Smallest transistor switches current with a single atom in solid electrolyte" http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/08/180816101939.htm
