ASUS Matrix Tear-Down: Radiator Replaces Shroud (2080 Ti)

    Dauer: 7:41

We were the first to publicly tear-down the ASUS Matrix RTX 2080 Ti, which uses an integrated radiator and CLC inside the shroud for cooling.
Ad: Buy Gigabyte's RTX 2070 Gaming OC (Amazon: geni.us/jzJ2)
The ASUS RTX 2080 Ti Matrix is a closed-loop liquid-cooled video card that uniquely builds the ~240mm radiator (almost) into the GPU shroud, except then also centers the radiator tank towards the video card. Further, a massive coldplate is used to contact the VRAM, while traditional heatsinks are used for the VRM components. The PCB is the same as the ROG Strix.

But is it better than 40€ Accelero Twin turbo II? :D Maybe do a test and put those manufacturers in shame who claim that their better coolers cost double than that to put on cards.

It is kinda cool to see that you and Linus took different routes to look at the cooler, so we get to see from both sides of the radiator, the top side veiw is a little more telling on how the radiator is buildt, but this was more telling about how the cold plate etc is.

I think this hasn't been done before for a couple reasons. Firstly the parts would easily add another $200 to the cost of the card. Would this really perform better than a high end air cooled card to justify the cost? Another reason is air flow. You're sticking a radiator up against a motherboard, sandwiched between a PCB and a PSU. You can put a couple bottom intake fans directly below it but it seems far from ideal. The hot air doesn't really have a clean escape. Vertical mount might be better, especially since this card has to weigh a ton. But eh...I don't know. If Asus actually releases this product I will really be looking forward to the reviews from GN.

Do you like the ROG STRIX GAMING GeForce RTX2080Ti, but think it's not quite special enough for you? Do you think that it it can't be overclocked quite high enough? Do you desperately need that extra bit of cooling power for those few extra FPS at 4K Ultra settings with ray tracing, even at the expense of having a card that: 1) is heavier, requiring reinforced slots AND additional retention, 2) has one additional source of noise (which will get noisier over time) and a potential point of failure, 3) requires high static pressure fans that must work a lot harder than they would on a typical graphics card with an open-design heatpipe cooler, due to a much higher fin density and a more enclosed shroud desing, having tighter gaps for the hot air to escape through, 4) will eventually lose that extra bit of edge in thermals over a the usual heatpipe open cooler solutions due to liquid evaporation, 5) despite water cooled, doesn't come with it's biggest advantage, that being giving you the choice of a favorable radiator placement and an easy fan replacement and/or upgrade, and 6) introduces the possibilty, however tiny, yet still present, of a catastrophic failure that has the potential of not only damaging your graphics card beyond repair, but other expensive components as well? Do you think none of the above are real concerns because you failed your basic physics class? Do you have too much money? Then this is the product for you.

Pretty incredible if this is much better than an air cooled card. I'd personally prefer external radiator but I guess there's a market for this too.

dumping the heat of a GPU into the case is like the exact opposite of the idea of the hybrid coolers, the whole purpose is to get the heat out of the case, you are just hot boxing the case with a cooler like that, limiting it's efficiency.

Last year CES was a bit meh but if this is an indicator of what new trends or ideas are comming I'm pretty excited of what this year has to offer . I do wonder though how easy it is to service this card , in case the pump dies , a hose cracks or the water level runs low . It would be a shame to throw out the whole cooler if some small part of it fails for some reason

Humm, the question might be stupid but: since AIO doesn't perform a lot better than air cooler, why doing this ? I mean after 2/3h of stress test the temperature might be the exact same as an aluminum/copper heatsink

I would be surprised if it has any benefits to a better air cooler and than you are left with all the drawbacks of a AiO. Pump sounds, won't be silent in idle, expensive, life expectancy 2-3 years at best, if something breaks you are literally screwed.

What's the point of a liquid cooler if you don't put the radiator away from the heat source? In such a small distance, heatpipes do the job well while they are incomparably more reliable, cheaper, silent, and the whole build is much lighter.
